Survivor: Family Therapy Edition
Apr 17, 2019
Family therapy sounds scary, right? A time to air grievances, yell, cry, be told how wrong you are. How can this possibly be productive and non-torturous? I'm sure you'd rather spend your time doing anything but all of that, however, your family is dealing with a big problem and you need help. Can family therapy help you?
Family therapy can be
used for many reasons. Perhaps there's a breakdown of communication in
the home. Maybe there has been a death or other tragic event that has
rocked your family to the core. Family therapy can help
you communicate things in a safe environment, as well as provide
feedback from a licensed professional. Also, therapy may help you cope
with things as a family unit that you are struggling with. As you open
up the lines of communication there may be issues
that you weren't even aware of. Therapy is a great place to talk those
issues out and to help each other understand your own perspective in a
situation.
It will be painful
though, right? Not necessarily. There might be sessions that are
uncomfortable as your family unpacks some emotional baggage they are
carrying around. Do you know what is more painful? Holding everything
in and never getting help for the issues at hand. You and your family
are worth the work you will need to put in to strengthen your
relationship with one another. The prospect of having a happy, healthy
and safe family should trump any potential discomfort,
especially if children are involved.
Family therapy can help you in so many ways. Take the time to discuss with your family members the option of seeking professional, compassionate help for whatever you are struggling with.
