Depression Counseling: A Cure for a Silent Demon

Depression is one of the biggest psychological demons that Americans face today. According to psycom.net, 15.7 million adults in the United States expressed that they experienced one major episode of depression in the past 12 months. Around 2.8 million adolescents experienced a major depressive episode in the past 12 months. This particular statistic comprises 11.4% of all adolescents aged 12 to 17 years of age. The good news is that those struggling with depression are not alone and depression counseling is available.


There are different manners in which depression counseling can help:

  1. Depression counseling can help one gain knowledge of the condition that is affecting their mood. Having knowledge of the condition can help those seeking treatment understand that depression is not a definition of who one is as a person. Counseling can establish the knowledge that depression is a disorder of the brain that can be treated.
  2. Strong counseling can assist those struggling with the disorder in establishing an effective plan for treatment and coping mechanisms for daily living. The better strategies that one has gained through counseling sessions helps to establish a better quality of life.
  3. The advent of counseling is a practical step that gives one struggling with depression someone to talk with about their feelings. Being able to talk with someone who understands depression establishes a strong peace of mind and can help people feel better.
  4. Counseling shows those with depression that they are people just like anyone else; therefore, it is okay to be happy and satisfied with who they are in their identity.

Pursuing treatment for depression is never a sign of weakness. Pursuing counseling is an indicator of great strength and endurance.
