The Benefits of Therapy when Self-Quarantining with Depression

When you're struggling with depression, today's hard times can feel even harder. Feelings of isolation are increased by stay-at-home orders, anxiety rises because of world events, and lack of a schedule can lead to a lack of motivation. If you're having trouble managing your emotions while in self-quarantine, here are some ways that seeing a therapist may be able to help.


  • Learn to Adapt to a New Lifestyle. In times like these, it can hard to adapt to rapidly changing requirements for work and home life, and depression can make change even harder. A therapist can help you identify what's keeping you trapped in the past and can assist you in adapting to the present.
  • Give Yourself Goals to Work Toward. With a changing world comes a lot of confusion, and for a lot of people, that means a sudden lack of routine. With nothing to work toward, it's easy to slip deeper into depression and lose even more motivation. A therapist can help you set realistic goals and start to build a routine that works for you, so that you can start moving forward instead of looking back.
  • Develop Healthy Coping Mechanisms. As stress and anxiety continue to rise, you may be tempted to turn to unhealthy mechanisms for coping, such as stress eating or excessive sleep. A therapist can help you identify unhealthy coping mechanisms and work to unlearn them, as well as teaching you new, healthy ways to cope with your feelings.
  • Remember That You're Not Alone. Self-quarantining is also called self-isolation, and for good reason. Being stuck at home can be very isolating, and it's easy to forget that you aren't on your own right now. A therapist can be someone to talk to when you're feeling alone, and a reminder that no matter how physically alone you may be, you're never truly on your own.
