Change Your Thinking with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Most humans, in some form or another, experience changes, and challenges in their mental states at some point in their lives. However, the tools, and resources for navigating these changes aren't always in front of our faces for us to utilize them. Also, they can be new to us, and difficult for us to understand. For example, how many of us have heard of cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT? This form of psychological treatment developed as a way to change people's thinking patterns. The uses for cognitive behavioral therapy are, potentially, limitless. CBT can be used to address issues such as:

  • Distorted Thinking: Helping one to recognize, and reevaluate this form of thinking in light of reality
  • Motivation of Others: Learning to understand their behaviors
  • Difficult Situations: Coping, using problem-solving skills
  • Confidence: Helping one to develop a sense of one's abilities

Essentially, cognitive behavioral therapy helps those that utilize it to become their own therapists. Coping skills are developed through in session exercises, as well as homework exercises. The goal is for the patient to learn to change their ways of thinking, problematic behavior, and emotions. Again, the usefulness of learning these skills can extend to all areas of life. For example, anxiety is common amongst most folks today. Learning cognitive behavioral therapy coping skills can help address and change the thinking patterns that contribute to everyday anxiety occurrences. Some of the skills developed are:

  • Facing Fears: As opposed to avoiding them
  • Role Playing: To prepare for potentially problematic situations
  • Calming: The mind and body
