Family Therapy for the Holidays

When you're putting together your to do list for the holidays, you might want to consider including family therapy in your plans. See how working with a counselor could help you and your loved ones.

Holidays can be a challenging time for anyone, and that's especially true if you or a family member are already dealing with conditions such as anxiety or depression. Even if you feel like your life is in balance the rest of the year, these months can create extra demands. Spending more time with your family is a blessing, but it can also provide more opportunities for conflicts to arise. You may notice old issues resurfacing just when you're under increased pressure from juggling more obligations, and facing higher levels of stress.

Family therapy can help by enabling you to spot dysfunctional patterns and improve your communications. You'll learn to set healthy boundaries, and make positive changes. You can't avoid complications, but you can learn to handle them more effectively. Meanwhile, here are a few more suggestions for dealing with holiday stress:

Practice self-care. Don't skimp on sleep and balanced meals just when you need your energy the most. Make time for adequate rest, good nutrition, and regular exercise.

Simplify your celebrations. You and your family might enjoy the holidays more if you do less. Pick a few favorite activities and rituals instead of overextending yourself.
