How to Tell If You're Depressed and What to Do About It

Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses people face today. Its effects can range from subtle dissatisfaction in your daily life to thoughts of self-harm or suicide. No matter the severity of your symptoms, depression is a real mental illness and can create serious issues in your day-to-day life and relationships. There is no shame in seeking help to manage or combat depression and one of the best treatments out there is depression counseling.


Frequent symptoms of depression that might be affecting you are:

  • Anger
  • Persistent sadness or crying
  • Irritability
  • Sleep disturbances: insomnia or excessive sleeping
  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide
  • Lack of pleasure or enjoyment in previously enjoyed activities (anhedonia)
  • Changes in appetite and/or changes in weight
  • Fatigue or lack of energy
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Physical pain (body aches, headaches, etc.)

It's important to remember that depression affects everyone differently, just because you don't identify with the symptoms listed above doesn't mean that you aren't struggling with depression. Talking through your symptoms with a trained and licensed therapist can help you to reach a deeper understanding of your feelings, why you feel that way, and how best to approach the situation to fix or reduce those feelings.
