Anxiety Counseling: What Are Your Options?

Everyone experiences anxiety at some level. However, when feelings of self-doubt, apprehension, and nervousness aren’t linked to a particular life event, anxiety can severely impair a person. You don’t have to live with the fear, obsessive thoughts, or insistent worries that an anxiety disorder can bring about. If anxiety interferes with your quality of life, anxiety therapy is a great place to start.

Therapy has shown to be the most useful option for many people who suffer from anxiety. The reason it is so helpful because it does more than simply treat the symptoms of anxiety, unlike medication. Also, it can help you learn how to relax and view life’s situations in new ways that are less frightening. Another thing that therapy can do is help you uncover what is causing your fears and worry. With therapy, you are given tools that help you defeat your anxiety.

There are different types of anxiety disorders and a therapist can tailor your therapy to your precise concerns. Treatment for someone with anxiety attacks will be different than that for someone with obsessive compulsive disorder. Also, the length of the therapy will depend on the specific symptoms and severity of the disorder. The American Psychological Association shares that significant improvements typically occur in as little as eight therapy sessions.

Along with therapy for anxiety, there are complementary therapies that can help lower your stress levels and help balance your emotions.
  • Relaxation Techniques-Mindfulness, controlled breathing, visualization, progressive muscle relaxation, and meditation, when practiced on a regular basis, can help you relax and reduce anxiety.
  • Exercise-Exercise naturally decreases stress and reduces anxious feelings. For maximum benefit, an hour of aerobic exercise performed on most days can provide significant relief. Some people benefit from as little as half an hour of exercise just a few times each week.
  • Hypnosis-Sometimes used in conjunction with therapy, hypnosis can provide additional options for facing fears and approaching them in new ways.
