Why the Family Approach in Depression Counseling Works
Apr 06, 2017
Everyone in the family suffers when one of its members has a depressive illness. This is why depression
counseling succeeds when the entire family becomes involved. Family
therapy allows the entire household to participate in the counseling
program. The unit becomes empowered and strengthened so that the
depressed individual is more like to succeed in his
treatment.
A
family therapist explores the social context in which her client
operates. Talking with everyone who lives with the client gives the
therapist a balanced picture of his home
life. Often, depressed individuals reside in families operating in some
level of dysfunction. While this situation does not specifically cause
the client's depression, residing in home where arguments and tension
are the norm can make him feel worse. Also,
note living with a depressed person often causes stress and sadness in
the other family members.
Through
therapy, the family is validated in regard to thoughts and emotions.
Each person becomes a valued part of the treatment plan. Understanding
this encourages them to be positive
and to make changes. They become educated regarding the illness and can
reassure the client that he is not alone in his recovery struggle.
Behavior
counseling teaches the family how to function better so the depressive
works on treatment in a more positive environment. The family learns how
to solve problems together;
they argue less and communicate more. The client thus enjoys a
collaborative effort for success.
