Break Out of Old Patterns to Have a Successful Relationship

Aug 06, 2020

Many couples could do with couples counseling, but it's not something that they consider going in for. This might be because they don't want to share what's going on in their marriage/relationship with a third person. Maybe they feel embarrassed about the way things are going. Or maybe there's still a lot of residual anger which prevents them from wanting to work things out.

The fact is that the problems that many couples have are not serious enough to warrant a breakup. They can be solved through better communication which can be brought about through counseling.

Unwillingness to Deal with Childhood Issues

But what is the counselor going to do for your relationship or your marriage that you can't do yourself? Many of us imagine that our childhood fears and traumas are going to be dredged up, something which is, at the very least, unpleasant for most of us. Plus, we don't see how going over the past is going to help us with the present.

Do Childhood Behaviors Influence the Present?

For some people, it may be necessary to go over their relationships with their parents and consider the patterns that were formed at that time. Did they come from a very strict or even an abusive home? Or were they spoiled and neglected at the same time?

The fact is that many people form certain patterns of behavior during childhood and continue to display those behaviors throughout their lives. If throwing a tantrum helped them in childhood, they'll continue to do it as adults. If crying helped them get their way, they might end up crying a lot.

How to Break Out of Old Patterns

But the fact is that these behaviors may not help them get what they want as adults. Instead, they have to learn to respond to the situation as needed. They have to learn to listen to the other person and give them what they need while asking for what they want in an assertive way. In this way, the needs of both partners can be satisfied within the relationship. And counseling can help them to achieve this aim.
